Upon further inspection, I see what is actually going on. This is an elaborate form of "Rock, Paper, Scissors" that is played in the Wisconsin area. If you look left to right, you will see student one has played "rock." Mr. Corley has played "half-scissors," which is an interesting play and would normally beat "rock" under Wisconsin rules.
Of course, both players have been trumped by the third student, who has played "rubber chicken."
